Boudoir VS Glamour VS Art Nude VS Erotic
I am being asked all the time by my clients what genre they should pick for their photo shoot. Boudoir, Glamour, nude or erotic? I will identify all genres below, so you will be absolutely clear on what you can expect from our photo shoot, which (by the way) you can book here. I will start with the definitions, than I will try to explain my interpretation of each genre and will show few example photos.
A boudoir is a lady’s private bedroom, sitting room or dressing room. The term derives from the French verb bouder, meaning “to sulk” or boudeur, meaning “sulky”.
The “Boudoir style” in photography: Typically shot in a photographer’s studio or luxury hotel suites, it has become fashionable to create a set of sensual or sexually suggestive images of women (and occasionally men and couples) in “boudoir style”. The most common manifestation of contemporary boudoir photography is to take variations of candid and posed photographs of the subject partly clothed or in lingerie.
Nudity is more often implied than explicit. Commercially the genre is often (though not exclusively) derived from a market for brides to surprise their future husbands by gifting the images on or before their wedding day. Other motivations or inspiration for boudoir photography shoots include anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, weight loss regimes, other form of body change or alteration (such as breast augmentation or reduction) and for servicemen and women overseas.
For me, Boudoir represents elegant sexiness. I always aim to use subtle settings to bring out the best from my model. I also put a lot of thoughts in my communication and pick some smooth Jazz music to create the right atmosphere for the shoot.
Take a look at few example photos of my Boudoir Photography below
Glamour photography is a genre of photography in which the subjects, usually female, are portrayed in erotic or exciting ways ranging from fully clothed to nude but in ways that either may conceal or may otherwise not especially draw attention to the subjects’ breasts and buttocks. Glamour photography is typically less explicit than erotica although the term may also be used as a euphemism for erotic photography. For glamour models right body shape and size is directly related to success. This is particularly the case of female breast, where having their size and shape altered by breast implants is considered crucial for success in the glamour industry.
Glamour photography is generally a composed image of a subject in a still position. The subjects of “glamour” photography for professional use are often professional models, and the photographs are normally intended for commercial use, including mass-produced calendars, pinups and men’s magazines such as Maxim; but amateur subjects are also sometimes used, and sometimes the photographs are intended for private and personal use only. Photographers use a combination of cosmetics, lighting and airbrushing techniques to produce an appealing image of the subject.
Glamour is different. Glamour is good. It is subjective, everyone I’ve talked to about glamour photography had a different definition for it. I usually use this style of photography if I want to create controversy, or just show my model in a more “I’m a woman, I’m confident, I’m sexy (and I know it 🙂 )” way. I find Glamour photography extremely useful for models with tattoos/piercings and/or really toned figure.
Example photos of Glamour Photography
Fine art nude photography is a genre of fine-art photography which depicts the nude human body with an emphasis on form, composition, emotional content, and other aesthetic qualities. The nude has been a prominent subject of photography since its invention, and played an important role in establishing photography as a fine art medium. The distinction between fine art photography and other subgenres is not absolute, but there are certain defining characteristics.
Erotic interest, although often present, is secondary, which distinguishes art photography from both glamour photography, which focuses on showing the subject of the photograph in the most attractive way, and erotic photography, which has the primary purpose of sexually arousing the viewer. Fine art photographs are also not taken to serve any journalistic, scientific, or other practical purpose. The distinction between these is not always clear, and photographers, as with other artists, tend to make their own case in characterizing their work, though the viewer may have a different assessment.
Art nude is all about mood and feelings for me. I am focusing on the shear beauty of my model’s body. I find this genre the visually most pleasing one, probably because there are no games to be played here, only to enjoy the view. The best possible gift to the one you really love, a great way to decorate your bedroom with a large canvas made from these photos.

Erotic photography is a style of art photography of an erotic and even a sexually suggestive or sexually provocative nature. Erotic photography is generally a composed image of a subject in a still position. Though the subjects of erotic photography are usually completely or mostly unclothed, that is not a requirement. Erotic photography should be distinguished from nude photography, which contains nude subjects not necessarily in an erotic situation.
Erotic photography is a lot different than art nude, in this case the purpose of the final image is to sexually arouse the viewer. I would advise this genre for the ones who are really confident and want to let themselves go sometimes and just enjoy the ride. This package is usually asked by professional models (or models whom are just starting in the industry) or by escorts for their portfolio. If you intend to submit these photos to different magazines to make some money out of them, just let me know and I’ll help you along the way…
I hope you have enjoyed this article and you are clear on what my interpretations are of the different genres. I am more than happy to give you more information or just to have a chat in general about your photographic needs. You can get in touch with me using the contact form, or just hit me up on Facebook.
Looking forward to hear your thoughts 🙂
A Boudoir photo shoot with Bethan (NSFW)
I’ve had a fantastic shoot with Bethan Black a while ago in her apartment. I usually shoot in Portsmouth, but for her I was driving all the way (well, 30 minutes 🙂 ) to Southampton. She is one very confident woman, and that shows on her photos too. I’ve been mostly using natural light for this series as the ambient light was gorgeous, so why fix something which is not broken? We’ve mostly been doing boudoir photos, but some art nude an erotic got place too.
The images are NSFW (Not Safe For Work), so please try to wait to check all photos in large size while you get home. Just for the record; I’m not taking any responsibility 🙂
Behind the scenes of our shoot at the airport
Behind the scenes photos from our fantastic shoot at an airport. Gorgeous models, beautiful dobermans and wicked aeroplanes.
The dogs are trained, so we were safe to work with them (ish 🙂 ), everybody had a really great time and the results are speaking for themselves. Make sure you check back later to see the finalized images.
SK8 – alternative use of ND filter
Shoot with Bethan Black on Southsea Beach few weeks ago. We wanted to do some alternative shoots, so we brought along a beautiful skateboard (courtesy of my brother from another mother Jon Lasenby) and a baseball hat. We’ve been working in harsh sunlight and only used a large reflector (with white side). I have positioned my model so the light was coming from behind her and we’ve bounced some light back on her.
It was a bit tricky working in these conditions, especially since I like to use shallow depth of field. If I were setting my aperture to the ‘usual’ F2.5 or F2.8′ and worked with the lowest ISO settings on my camera (ISO 100), the maximum shutter speed on my camera (max shutter speed on my camera is 1/4000th of a second) wouldn’t be enough to get a correct exposure.
So what are the options?
Shoot with smaller aperture. In my case I could’ve been working with setting my aperture around F8, this would give me the shutter speed of 1/2000th.
Pack the camera bag and go home
Use ND (nuetral density) filters. As our favourite source, Wikipedia says: “In photography and optics, a neutral density filter or ND filter is a filter that reduces or modifies the intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue of color rendition. It can be a colorless (clear) or grey filter.” As I would say: “Use this if you need less light hitting your camera’s sensor”. I admit this is pretty rare occasion if you’re a UK based photographer, but still happens sometimes 🙂
Enough from the words, here are some images from this shoot
